Medicine Hat man recognised for river journey

A Medicine Hat resident has been awarded after he completing an epic canoe journey in honor of his uncle.

Domonique Liboiron began his trip last June as he wanted to raise the awareness of heart disease and spread his uncle’s ashes in his favorite city, New Orleans.

He paddled more than 3,700 miles on the adventure, before reaching his final destination on January 28 of this year. The journey was even covered with a national news feature.

Liboiron was given the Spirit of Adventure award by the readers of Canoe and Kayak magazine. Members of the public were invited to submit the names of someone they wished to nominate for the prize, and the magazine chose the seven that they felt best exemplified what the contest is all about. Readers then voted for their top choice, and Liboiron was the clear winner.

The award ceremony was held on August 1 in Salt Lake City, Utah. While he was unable to attend, he sent a video message in which he thanked the magazine and its readers for choosing him. A local print company was on hand to provide professionally-produced certificates for the event.

Liboiron will be sharing his story in classrooms throughout the province in the coming months. He will also be giving a presentation to the Chinook Teacher’s Association later this week, where he is expected to discuss his journey and how it’s possible for anyone to achieve their goals through hard work, perseverance and determination.
