Information session available for both novice and experienced hikers

The Rideau Trail Association has scheduled a full-day Introduction to Hiking seminar, for anyone interested in learning more about the sport.

The Ottawa hiking club has designed the session to cover important safety issues that many hikers commonly face, including tips on how to avoid dangers and easy fixes if problems are encountered. Attendees will also learn what equipment is recommended, and the importance of planning and preparation before leaving for a hike.

The seminar will include a guided hike, where the presenters will explain trail etiquette and responsible trail usage. Session attendees can practice some of their new knowledge at the end of the seminar, during the final hike of the day.

Made up entirely of volunteers, the RTA provides free maps to anyone visiting the trails. Many changes can be made to the Rideau Trail during a season, so hikers are encouraged to make sure they always have the latest map on hand. Maps can be picked up in brochure form on site, or club members can use online printing to obtain them.

The Rideau Trail runs from Ottawa to Kingston, offering casual strolls as well as demanding treks for experienced enthusiasts. Guided hikes are offered on many days and evenings during the week, as well as on the weekend.

Introduction to Hiking will be held at the Nepean Sportsplex in Ottawa, on Saturday, May 6. To register for the course, visit the RTA website or call 613-860-2225. An Ottawa club membership is included with the $85 registration fee.
