Downsview Park preparing to host camping workshop

August 1, 2018 by

Downsview Park offers the community a chance to get in touch with nature right in the heart of the city, and a special program has been developed for local families to help them add to their woodcraft skills.

This free initiative, which is being offered through the co-operation of Parks Canada and Downsview Park, will provide a camping experience for families. It will teach them what they need to know to have a fun camping trip, and they will be well prepared for most challenges they might encounter.

The students in the workshop will find out what they should pack for a successful campout and they will also discover how to use the gear. Instruction will be provided in how to put up a tent, how to safely construct and light a campfire and also how to cook outdoors. There will be a discussion about how to respect the plants and animals in the wild with an emphasis being placed on the principles of “leave no trace behind”.

The event is open to all, but anyone who is 16 or under will need to be accompanied by an adult. Print shops can provide brochures and other items to distribute during this sort of activity.

Learn to Camp will be offered in Downsview Park on August 12. It is scheduled to run from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
