Doug Flutie to headline locally made football game

Hamilton-based video game publishers Spear Interactive has signed an image-rights deal with legendary quarterback Doug Flutie.

Flutie will serve as a brand ambassador and appear as a playable character in the 2019 edition of the company’s Maximum Football franchise. The game will be developed by Peterborough-based company Canuck Play, which relaunched the series in 2017. Flutie will likely feature in the logo design and promotional products for the next game.

The Maryland-born athlete won college football’s Heisman Trophy award when playing for Boston College in 1984, highlighted by a memorable Hail Mary pass in a game against Miami. In Canada, he is best known for his eight-year career in the CFL, where he won the Grey Cup three times and a record six Most Outstanding Player awards. Those around Hamilton, where Spear Interactive operates out of local incubator The Forge, will probably not like to be reminded that two of those three Grey Cup wins were with rivals Toronto Argonauts.

Maximum Football is a series of independent sports games that allow players to create their own teams and play under their choice of American, Canadian and college rules. The 2018 edition was released on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, marking the first time Canadian-rules football could be played on a console. The title dates back to 2006, when the company was known as Wintervalley Software.
