Chinese New Year celebration returns to Edmonton

The ‘2018 Lunar New Year Extravaganza’ will be held at the mall again this year, to share the Chinese culture with all Edmontonians.

Organized each year by the Edmonton Chinatown Multi-Cultural Centre, the New Year’s celebration serves as a way to share and promote Chinese heritage with all Canadians. The two-day extravaganza gathers more than 25,000 people together to enjoy cultural entertainment, a Kids Corner with age appropriate games and gifts, a new Eating Contest featuring traditional Chinese foods, and an unprecedented number of vendor exhibition booths.

The annual ‘Lunar New Year Flower Market’ will feature booths selling Chinese New Year-themed gifts, flowers and food. Live performances will also be held at the market, including kung fu and tai chi demonstrations, Lion Dances, and Chinese music and singing.

Sponsors are still needed for this event and are invited to apply with the Edmonton Chinatown Multicultural Centre. The nonprofit centre offers a unique opportunity to promote a business to the over 25,000 residents from Alberta that are expected to attend the festival. Sponsorship benefits may include the option of distributing promotional products during the event, or using the Multicultural Centre’s unique logo design on a company’s printed materials.

This year’s event will be held this Saturday, February 3, and Sunday, February 4 at the Mayfield Toyota Ice Palace and the West Edmonton Mall. Admission costs $2 for adults and children ages 11 and up. Seniors over the age of 65 and children ages 10 and younger are free.
