Calgary Fringe Festival returns

June 29, 2011 by

The 5th annual Calgary Fringe Festival will take place from July 29 to August 6. It is an indoor theatre festival which takes place in the Inglewood area of the city. Printing companies have provided colourful buttons, tickets and posters for this yearly event.

Those attending the Fringe Festival are required to purchase a $5 Fringe button. This is a membership pass that you need to be allowed admission to any event. Tickets for the individual performances can be purchased online or at the information booth located in the City of Calgary Parking Lot.

Those who participate in the Fringe Festival come from all over the world. The festival kicks off with a performance of Naked Improv; this is improv at its most basic from a local company, performed fully clothed. On Saturday July 30, the free Inglewood Sunfest will be held on 9th Ave SE and will feature vendors and street entertainment. There will be a pie eating contest, a Kids Zone, a fashion show, and all sorts of mostly local street performers. It takes place from 11am-5pm.

Among the hundreds of plays and performances that will be presented at the festival are Houdini’s Last Escape, Hockey Dad: a Play in 3 Periods and Music on the Orient Express: a Melodic Whodunit. At the end of the festival the Best of Fest winner will be chosen and will give a special performance on August 6. The winner is decided on three criteria; an audience favourite, popularity and media.
