Anime convention returns to Edmonton for 25th year

July 10, 2018 by

The 25th annual Animethon is taking place for three days next month in Edmonton. It is dedicated to anime, Japanese popular culture, and gaming.

The convention is presented by the Alberta Society for Asian Popular Arts. It will feature international guests from the world of anime and comic books. This year’s guests include voice actors Daisuke Sakaguchi, Erica Lindbeck and Jamie Marchi. The guests will sign autographs, pose for photographs and take part in panel discussions.

There will also be a cosplay (costume) contest, a Lolita Fashion Show and an AMV (Anime music video) competition. There will also be console game tournaments, an Idol Festival Dance Showcase, and musical performances. Visitors can relax in the Maid Café and be served by traditional anime characters. In addition, a dealers’ room will feature various related items for sale such as action figures, graphic novels, and original artwork.

Organizers of the convention have commissioned an anniversary art book that contains illustrations and posters from the past 25 years of the anime convention. It is likely that they worked with an Edmonton printing services company to produce this item. It sells for $35.

Animethon will be held at the Shaw Conference Centre from August 10 to 12. Three-day passes cost $50 and must be purchased by August 6. To learn more, visit the official convention website.
