Ottawa area prepares for garlic festival

The 18th annual garlic festival returns to the Ottawa region later this month.

Hosted by the Carp Farmers’ Market, this two-day event is all about garlic. Guests can cast their ballot in the Best Garlic Contest, check out the Garlic Tasting Event, and enjoy some Garlic Shots.

Catherine Cheff from Cheff Fields Farm will be demonstrating how to braid garlic. She has been harvesting the vegetable and using this method to store it during the winter months for more than 20 years.

Celebrity chefs, including Melanie Boudens from ‘Grow Your Roots’ and Natasha LeBlanc from ‘Tasha’s Table’, will be giving cooking with garlic demonstrations. Brochures with recipes may be provided before and after the shows.

Attendees can speak with any of the garlic vendors on site to learn more about how they grow their variety of garlic, how it is harvested, and the ideal way to store the cloves. The vendors take great pride in their crop and look forward to sharing their knowledge with the public.

Fresh cloves of more than 80 different varieties of garlic will be available for purchase. Many promotional products, including recipe books, pottery, garlic spreads and dressings, will be for sale at the more than 120 booths set up at the festival.

The garlic festival will be held this weekend, August 12 and 13, at the Carp Fairgrounds located at 3790 Carp Road. Admission and parking are both free.
