Whitby to take part in worldwide Earth Hour activities

January 23, 2017 by

This spring, Whitby will join other communities all over the world in showing the earth some love.

Businesses and households across the town will be encouraged to turn out their lights and power down their electronics during this global earth hour event. Locals can then take advantage of the darkened skies by participating in a special community stargazing party that will be held at Port Whitby Marina.

Members of the Durham Region Astronomical Association and staff members of The Town of Whitby will be on hand with telescopes to help those who come out to view the stars, planets and moon without the light pollution. This is an opportunity that only occurs once a year, and the event’s organizers are hoping as many people as possible will participate.

While the outdoor activities are going on, people can browse through displays that will be set up in the marina, and enjoy the snacks and refreshments that will be provided for them. They will have the chance to enjoy socializing with the others who have come out to view the night-time sky. Booklet printing can be used to create simple sky guides and star maps for those who participate in the event.

The Earth Hour lights out activities will take place on March 25th from 8:30 pm until 9:30 pm, and the stargazing party will run from 8:00 pm until 10:00 pm at Port Whitby Arena. Further details can be found on the Town of Whitby website.
