Vaughan Design Review Panel is launched

The Vaughan Design Review Panel, a volunteer group of architects, landscape architects and an artist, who are leaders in their respective fields, is now underway. The Panel is expected to be a crucial part of the land development process in Vaughan. Only Toronto, Ottawa, London and Mississauga have a similar-style review agency in Ontario.

The Panel was formed by the City of Vaughan to review all major urban-style developments proposed to be built such as highrise apartments and mixed use complexes. Of particular concern are the developments proposed for the Vaughan City Centre, a new uptown to be constructed at Highway 407 and Jane Street that will rival North York, Toronto, Mississauga, Ottawa and Hamilton.

Landowners are required to give a brief presentation to the Panel, and then answer any questions. Full colour poster printing is usually presented to show a 3D view of the proposed development, as well as a Design Brief in a document format illustrating the design intent, shadow studies, architectural elevations, parking layout and urban planning data. Many applicants and their consultants use a combination of a Power Point Presentation along with posters, a document and other handouts. A brochure format would also be appropriate.

Since October of 2011, the Panel has met once per month and have provided advice, opinions and comments on six development applications. Vaughan City Council will consider the recommendations of the Design Review Panel along with staff reports and public opinion when making a decision on whether to allow a development to be built.
