Upcoming convention salutes popular culture

The Red Deer Pop Culture and Cosplay Extravaganza is taking place next month for two days. The event is dedicated to anime, comics, arts and popular culture.

During the event, there will be panel discussions on topics such as costume making, collecting and photography, and a vendor’s room. The vendors will be selling items such as comic books, costumes, action figures, graphic novels and photographs.

There are also two costume contests taking place. The Kids Costume Contest is judged by the public through ballots handed out by vendors, showcases or a vote on Facebook. The top three favorite winners will receive Toys R Us gift cards.

The adult cosplay costume contest will take place on March 4 beginning at 4:00 PM. Contestants will be judged on workmanship, authenticity and performance. The top three chosen by judges and the fan favorite will each receive gift cards and show bucks.

Occasionally, there are parades during the show and it is likely that some Red Deer participants will be carrying banners to draw attention to themselves or a cause.

The Red Deer Pop Culture and Cosplay Extravaganza will be held at Westerner Park from March 4 to 5. Adult passes cost $15 per day or $25 for both days, and youth passes are $10 or $15. Call 1-866-606-8507 to learn more about the event.
