The Orchard coming to Downsview Park
June 29, 2012 by Stephen
Those who love the smell of apple blossoms in the spring will soon have to go no farther than Downsview Park. Ground-breaking for The Orchard, which combines urban agriculture and the recreational aspects of Downsview Park, is now well underway and the area should become accessible this summer.
The one-hectare public open space is located in the southwest corner of Downsview Park along Keele Street, so it will be a highly visible part of the park. The round-shaped design features a series of apple trees located in rows, reminiscent of a traditional apple orchard, but it will have a small pavilion, canopy and washrooms at the center to accommodate a number of park programs for daycares, youth groups, conservation agencies, and the general public.
Access to The Orchard will be from the 2.8 km trail looping through Downsview Park, making it a destination point along the trail. The Downsview Park website offers a 3D map showing the location of The Orchard and the trail system within the overall design of Downsview Park. A large, multi-use recreational facility like Downsview Park would benefit greatly from flyer printing to help guide users to the complex site and provide detailed descriptions of the park facilities.
The Orchard is part of the Cultivation Campus section of Downsview Park which aims to promote urban agriculture within the city. If all goes well, The Orchard will be open for visitors by the end of September. Visitors and residents can enjoy the sweet aroma of apple blossoms next spring.
