Revolutionary Straw Paper Used to Print Margaret Atwood Books
October 22, 2011 by Chloe
$100 may seem expensive for a printed Margaret Atwood book, but the revolutionary new straw paper used is well worth the money, print companies and industry proponents say.
500 printed copies of the book In Other Worlds: SF and Human Imagination was printed on nonprofit forest advocacy group Canopy, a nonprofit which has continued to support the use of environmentally sustainable paper in the print industry. Second Harvest paper is made from straw leftover from grain harvest as well as recycled paper. The printing of the book is a way of pioneering and advertising the technology, hopefully so other print companies will catch on and use this revolutionary paper option whenever possible.
Margaret Atwood herself decided to join Canopy to reduce the print industry’s ecological footprints but also show that alternative straw paper can be just as effective as conventional alternatives. The Second Harvest paper used for printer is also joining forces with a few leading North American printers to provide environmental friendly paper for ecologically conscious print companies. Copies of the book are available exclusively through Canopy.
Canopy has several offices in the BC and Toronto/
Mississauga area and works diligently with the Canada’s majour consumer magazine conglomerates to enact environmental policies on paper use. Rogers Publishing, Transcontintenal Inc, St. Josephs Publishing and TVA Publishing have all worked with Canopy to develop eco-paper policies that will help reinforce conservation initiatives. These four companies represent over one quarter of the paper volume of consumer magazines.
