Maple Leaf Foods expands further into Hamilton
November 5, 2011 by Martin
Maple Leaf Foods announced recently that they were closing several meat processing plants in Canada; among those cities that have lost a total of 1500 jobs due to this are Kitchener, Moncton and
Toronto. However, at the same time, Maple Leaf Foods announced that they were investing $560 million over three years to build a prepared meat processing plant in
Hamilton that will open in 2013.
This is the second announcement Maple Leaf Foods has made in regards to the Hamilton area; earlier this year they announced the opening of the country’s largest bakery in the city. The two facilities will be located in the Red Hill Business Park South. The processing plant will cost $395 million and will be 402,000 square feet. Maple Leaf Foods believes that their consolidation of plants throughout the country will help to reduce operating costs and will increase productivity. In addition, they believe their changes will result in 1150 new jobs.
Maple Leaf Foods has a real opportunity in the Hamilton area to increase their customer base. Offering discounts for locally processed food might make residents more likely to purchase from the company. Flyer printing companies can help them design a direct mail marketing campaign which will introduced them to the city as a new business and job creator; offering a discount through a coupon will then help the company gauge exactly how successful such a campaign is. In addition, linking that direct mail campaign to an online component will further increase it efficiency.
