Printing companies in the Kelowna area will honour a former mayor as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations on March 9. Between the hours of 5:30-9:30pm a family friendly event will be held at the Laurel Packinghouse in downtown Kelowna commemorating many memorable women in the community.

The event will host a number of prominent panel speakers, led by CBC’s Alya Ramadan, and include performances, food and wine and activities for children. Former mayor Sharon Shepherd will be among one of the many women mentioned and praised in this year’s
The festivities give local printing companies a valuable opportunity to provide printing services for the community. In addition to banner printing for the event, printers can become involved in publishing materials for the Okanagan College Women’s Resource Centre and its 2012 themes of ‘Women In/And Politics.”

The 2012 Women’s Day celebrations in Kelowna attempt to highlight the ambivalence many women feel towards politics and political involvement in general. The Gert Beadle Award will be presented to an individual who has shown an extraordinary commitment towards social equality and social justice issues. The award will be presented by the Okanagan College Women’s Resource and Education Foundation, a sister organization to the Kelowna Women’s Resource Centre. The centre also produces a number of printed publications about gender issues every year and is also active on Facebook.

The IWD (International Women’s Day) celebrations have been observed since the early 1900’s and are now even official holidays in many countries.
