Durham West Arts Centre seeks permanent home
July 25, 2011 by Martin
The Durham West Arts Centre is looking to raise funds for a new home. Currently housed at the Pickering Potter Studio in the Pickering Recreation Complex, through the Durham West Arts Centre Foundation they are in the process of raising money for a permanent home for the Centre. In order to raise funds, the Centre holds several events such as tours and live performances throughout the year. The Foundation arranges for the printing of products such as brochures and flyers to inform the public of their fund raising efforts and the importance of an arts centre to the community.
The Durham West Arts Centre (DWAC) is a purely volunteer organization, their goals are to have
“the opportunity to teach, interact and engage the public through dynamic programming.”
Past events presented by the DWAC include a spring studio tour of local artist’s studios, a youth art exhibit and auction, the Art Noel show and sale, a benefit for Japanese tsunami relief and a continuing Saturday morning music program. DWAC is also offering pottery courses for all levels and a pottery summer camp.
The Durham West Arts Centre would like to become a major hub in the arts in the Pickering area. It is important that each community have a dedicated arts organization. The importance of art education can never be overestimated; an arts education makes you a better-rounded person in all aspects of your life. With many schools cutting funding for arts programs, an organization like DWAC becomes more important as it offers a place for those interested in the arts to express themselves.
